The beaches of Procida
Dark sand, stairways and wind: the right beach on Procida depends on how you get there and what time of day it is.
Six beaches on an island of 3.7 km², and no two alike. The Chiaia is the most sheltered and you only get there by going down about a hundred and eighty steps. The Chiaiolella has road access, the L2 bus from the harbour and the beach clubs. The Ciraccio is long and open, but in the afternoon it catches the wind. The Silurenza solves the wait for the hydrofoil, the Lingua is tiny and pebbly, the Pozzo Vecchio is the Postino one.
Two things to know first: the dark sand gets very hot and the beach clubs’ prices are not published anywhere. Ask on the beach before you lay out your towel.
All beaches
Chiaia Beach
Dark sand, shallow water, the most sheltered bay on the island. You get there only on foot, down about 180 steps, or on the little boat from the Corricella.
Chiaiolella Beach
Direct road access, the L2 bus from the harbour, beach clubs and restaurants two steps away. The beach to choose when you do not want complications.
Ciraccio Beach
Long, open, windy. Direct road access and far more room than the Chiaiolella, but in the afternoon the mistral makes itself felt.
Lingua Beach
Tiny, pebbly, next to a working harbour. A bottom that drops away at once and a pink light at sunset that pays back the inconvenience.
Pozzo Vecchio Beach
The bay where Troisi recited Neruda: small, horseshoe-shaped, in the middle of open country. A short but steep descent and almost no shade.
Silurenza Beach
Just west of the harbour, on Via Roma: the beach that solves the wait for the hydrofoil and the first half day on the island.

Which is the easiest beach to reach on Procida?
The Chiaiolella: direct road access, the L2 bus from the harbour, beach clubs and restaurants a couple of steps away. The Silurenza is even closer to the harbour, on foot along Via Roma, but it is small.
Are the beaches on Procida sandy?
Almost all of them, dark volcanic sand that gets very hot in the middle of the day. The Lingua is the exception: it is pebbly, with a bottom that drops away at once.
