Silurenza Beach

Always accessible Marina Grande
Back to Marina Grande

The Silurenza, which some people also call the Grotte beach, has one argument and it is enough for it: it is the handiest beach on the island. It sits just west of the harbour at Marina Grande, on Via Roma, and you get there on foot with your suitcase still in your hand. No stairway to do, no bus to catch, no boat to ask for. If you land at 11:00 and you want to be in the water at 11:20, this is the only possible answer. And it is also the beach where the day ends for anyone with a hydrofoil in the afternoon who does not want to spend two hours sitting in the bar on the quay.

How you get there: essentially you just get there

You walk along Via Roma westwards, away from the ferry quay, and the beach is there. It is the only beach on Procida you reach with no stairway at all and no transport at all. The road reaches it too, so in theory you can get there by car: in practice, from 30 March to 15 October 2026 non-residents may not land vehicles on the island, so for very nearly all summer visitors the question does not arise. The full rules, with the exemptions and the fines, are on the page about getting around Procida.

The comparison that counts

Line the island’s six beaches up and the difference jumps out at you. At the Chiaia you go down about 180 steps and the road does not reach. At the Pozzo Vecchio there is a short but steep descent. At the Chiaiolella and the Ciraccio the road arrives, but you need twenty minutes on the bus. At the Silurenza you get there in five minutes on foot from the ferry. For anyone travelling with luggage, with a pushchair or with somebody who does not do stairs, this is the beach on the island.

What the beach is like (and what we are not telling you)

It is small and tucked in, set just outside the harbour. The sources describe it as suitable for families with children and as the natural choice for anyone waiting for the hydrofoil.

On one thing we would rather stay quiet: we are not writing what exactly is under your feet. No reliable source specifies whether the bottom is sand, coarse sand or shingle, and there is no point inventing it to fill a line. Take an air bed or a mat and you are covered either way; you will find out in thirty seconds when you get there.

In the same way we are not publishing the exact coordinates of this beach. There is no reliable mapped point and giving you five decimal places of precision on a position nobody has verified would only be an elegant way of getting it wrong. The address is Via Roma, the harbour is behind you: you need nothing else to find it.

The cannon rock

On the Silurenza there is a rock that people here call "the cannon" and that is used for diving. It is the detail that makes this beach a village place and not just a convenience for visitors: in summer there are always youngsters climbing up, looking at the water and throwing themselves in.

An obvious but necessary warning: nobody checks the depth for you and there are no signs. Watch what the locals do, watch where they go in, and if you are not sure do not jump. The rest of the beach you swim in perfectly calmly.

Beach club, bar-restaurant and the usual unpublished prices

The Silurenza has an equipped beach club, with a bar and restaurant: you can eat without getting dressed again and without climbing back into town, which here is not a given. The rest of the beach is free.

What it costs

We do not know, and nobody publishes it. For 2026 the prices at the Silurenza beach club do not appear to be circulated, as is the case for all the island’s beach clubs: you ask the price on the sand, before you take a parasol and sunbeds. Anybody online who gives you a precise figure is estimating it. If you do not want to spend anything, the free part is two steps away and costs nothing.

Behind you there is the whole harbour front: the old bars on Via Roma for breakfast and for the wait, the bus terminus near the church of Santa Maria della Pietà, the shops. For a proper fish lunch, the Corricella is about ten minutes on foot downhill and on the quay there are the village restaurants, among them Il Pescatore.

Who the Silurenza suits

You go if: you are on a day trip with few hours, you have luggage with you, you are travelling with small children or with somebody who cannot do stairs, or you have a long wait before the journey home. In all these cases it is simply the right choice, without argument.

Change beach if: you want the island’s good sea. The Silurenza is handy, not spectacular: it sits next to a working harbour, it is small and it has neither the breadth of the Chiaia nor the width of the Ciraccio. If you have a whole day, spend it elsewhere and keep the Silurenza for the last swim before you board.

Anyone who wants to see the rest of the coast without walking can take a trip round the island with swimming stops: you leave from near here and in two hours you see the coves you cannot reach from land. The comparison between all the beaches, access by access, is in the guide to Procida’s beaches.

Timing

The beach for waiting

If you have two hours before the hydrofoil, you get here in five minutes on foot from the quay and still have a swim. No other beach on the island allows that.

Money

Ask the price before you sit down

The beach club’s prices are not published. They are asked for on the spot, and the free part stays free.

What to bring

An air bed, to be safe

No source specifies the type of ground. With a mat or an air bed you are fine whatever you find.

A few minutes on foot: you walk along Via Roma westwards, leaving the ferry quay behind you. It is the only beach on the island reachable without stairs and without transport.

We are not writing it because no reliable source specifies it. Bring an air bed or a mat and you are covered either way.

Is it suitable for children?

The sources describe it as suitable for families with children, mainly for the convenience: no stairways, facilities two steps away and the harbour close by. It is still a public beach with no lifeguard.

How much are sunbeds and a parasol?

It does not appear to be published: for 2026 the beach club does not put out a price list. You ask the price on the sand before you settle in; the free part is free.

What is the cannon rock?

A rock on the Silurenza that is used for diving, very popular with the island’s youngsters. There is no indication at all of the depth: watch where the others go in before you jump.

Can you eat on the beach?

Yes, the beach club has a bar and restaurant. For a fish lunch on the sea, the Corricella is about ten minutes on foot downhill from the harbour.

Can you get there by car?
